First Consultation by Age 7

Though most orthodontic treatment begins between the ages of 9 and 14, it is important to visit an orthodontics no later than age 7 because your child will have enough permanent teeth to determine whether an orthodontic problem is present or developing.  Some orthodontic problems are more easily corrected when found early, so some children would benefit from earlier treatment. This earlier treatment can reduce the risk of trauma to front teeth, correct harmful habits, guide jaw growth, improve appearance, guide permanent teeth into a more ideal position, and possibly prevent the need for surgical orthodontics at a later time. If your child needs orthodontic treatment, Dr. Anderson can recommend the best time to begin treatment.

Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontic Treatment

• Jaw position too far forward or back
• Early or late loss of baby teeth
• Protruding front teeth
• Grinding or clenching
• Crowded, misplaced or non-erupting permanent teeth
• Mouth-breathing
• Thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting
  
• Difficulty chewing or biting
• Teeth not touching when biting (open bite)
• Upper teeth more inward than lower teeth (cross bite)
